Scup Creative was founded on a simple belief: creativity is one of the most powerful tools kids have for understanding themselves and the world around them. As an educator with over a decade of experience in the classroom, and before that, 15 years as a professional designer I've spent most of my career thinking about how creative work happens, and how to teach it.
My approach is rooted in the Studio Habits of Mind, a framework from Harvard's Project Zero that names the habits real artists and designers rely on: persisting through a hard problem, observing closely, envisioning what isn't there yet, and reflecting honestly on your own work. These aren't just art skills — they're life skills, and creative projects are simply a great vehicle for building them.
Wherever possible, we also get outside. Connecting kids to the natural world sharpens attention and sparks ideas in a way four walls rarely can, and it's something I try to weave into our work whenever the weather and the project allow.
